In many clinical settings, secondgenerationantipsychotics are preferred overfirst-generation antipsychotics because theycause fewer acute1 and chronic2 neuromotorside effects. In addition, second-generationantipsychotics may have improved3,4 andbroader5 efficacy and are potentially associatedwith somewhat lower rates of nonadherence6compared with those of the olderagents.
