Cardiovascular disease, which includes coronary heart disease, cerebrovascular disease, and peripheral vascular disease, is far and away the leading cause of death in the United States and most developed countries, accounting for about 1 in 2 fatalities.3 The World Health Organization (WHO) has estimated that cardiovascular disease will become the leading cause of death in the world by 2020.4 Among the major risk factors for cardiovascular disease are obesity, dyslipidemia, hypertension, and hyperglycemia.’ ‹
