Article Abstract

Letter to the Editor

Sir: Agitated behavior of schizophrenic patients refractoryto antipsychotic treatment frequently leads to prolonged psychiatricinpatient stays. Difficulty in controlling such behaviorscan impede discharge planning more than any other aspect ofschizophrenia (e.g., negative symptoms). Treatments that canreduce persistent agitation are thus a key component of helpingpatients leave the hospital and function in the community.
