An Update on MAOIs: Dietary Restrictions and Drug Interactions

David A. Flockhart, MD, PhD

Published: December 15, 2012

Article Abstract

Food and drug interactions with monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) can lead to serious adverse effects, including hypertensive crisis and serotonin syndrome. Newer MAOIs that are selective and reversible or that have non-oral delivery methods may lower these risks and, thus, make MAOIs a possible choice of treatment for patients with depression.
