Sir: Dr. Smith raises the important question of how to minimize the risk of renal effects in lithium treatment.

Three approaches have been proposed. First, the possibility was raised that a single dose of lithium per day would allow a reduction of the polyuria and subsequent polydipsia that are bothersome side effects of lithium treatment in an estimated 30% of patients.’ ‹
