Eight new antidepressants have been introduced in thepast decade (Table 1). The improved safety, tolerability, and perceived effectiveness of these medications havedramatically increased public awareness of depression as aserious illness and have contributed to the increase in acceptanceof medication as a treatment modality. Despite advancesin the diagnosis and treatment of depressive illness,the outcome of pharmacotherapy remains unsatisfactory formany patients.
